Questions by Cody “Micajah” Bye, Managing Editor
Answers by Kane Hao, Product Director of MWO, Ingle Games
Over the past year, the growth of free-to-play massively multiplayer online games has been enormous. With each passing month, more games and publishing studios jump into the North American market, and it’s been interesting to see how these have pushed the boundaries of how MMOGs are developed and designed. To set themselves apart, these developers really have to create some incredibly unique products and features. One of the games with some of the most intriguing concepts is Magic World Online, a recently released game that is drawing some attention from the North American press, including the editors at Ten Ton Hammer. Recently, Cody “Micajah” Bye sat down with Kane Hao, the product director for Magic World Online, to learn the intricacies of the game and why North American gamers should be interested in the title. Enjoy!

Ten Ton Hammer: When was Magic World Online first released? How many expansions and/or updates have been made to the game?

Kane Hao: MWO is actually an MMORPG made by a Chinese design team called the GoldCool Studio. The game was first released in China in March 2007, and after that, five expansion packs have been released for the Chinese servers. For North America, we simply skipped the first two expansion packs and start with the third one, which is a more stable version with much enriched game contents. We will release the subsequent expansion packs in the next few months.

Ten Ton Hammer: How do players advance in Magic World Online? Do they simply improve their skills or is MWO a class-based system?

Kane: There are many ways for players to advance in MWO: Training by killing monsters, and doing quests are the two basic ways. MWO is a class based game, with four basic character classes for players to choose. There are a ton of skills available for each class, so, in addition to leveling-up, players can work on their proficiency of different kills.

Magic World Online is a class-based game where players advance by killing monsters or completing quests.

Ten Ton Hammer: How many classes and/or races are there in Magic World Online? Can you describe them for us?

Kane: There are two basic races named the Dynasty and the Empire, representing the two opposing camps in the game. There are 4 basic classes for each race: warrior, archer, summoner and mage. Furthermore, there is a unique feature in MWO called the Class Transfer, meaning that after your character of a particular class reach a certain level, you will have the choice to transfer it to a more advanced sub-class. There will be a total of four times that you can transfer class for each character. All together, there are a total of 52 sub-classes titles available, out of which 16 are final sub-classes.

Ten Ton Hammer: Can you tell us a bit about the backstory of MWO?

Kane: Sure. The background story of MWO sets in a ancient mythical world describing a haunting myth of Gods, Humans and Devils. Dynasty and Empire, namely Humans’ two historically opposing camps, once invited a catastrophic abuse of Gods’ Dominant Sword, a divine magic sword used to seal the destructive nasty Devils that had long been troubling Gods’ dominion and Humans’ survival. Released from the long-standing solitary confinement, Devils turned out to be such an irresistible force that they poured out all their pain and suffering, hostility and hatred to justify themselves as the savage killers of the remaining Gods and Humans. Driven to the edge of extinction, the sinful and helpless Humans have no choice but to try desperately to sink their differences and fight their way out. For the miserable, is there one crumb of hope left to change the ultimate fate?

Ten Ton Hammer: How much emphasis are you placing on the localization of the MWO client for the North American audience? Will players be satisfied with the text translations in the game?

Kane: Localization is the key to the success of our game. Based on the results of our first round of Closed Beta test, and the feedback from the several thousand devoted testers, we have improved the localization of the game a great deal, and it is now in a very good shape. We owe many thanks to our testers, who have been tremendously supportive and helpful, not only to find the bugs in our game, but also to report and correct many language issues. The players should be very satisfied with the text translation of the game at this moment. Check it out!

Ten Ton Hammer: In one of the FAQs on your official website, you mention that there are weapons and mounts that “grow with you” as you become more powerful in the game. How does this work? Will players have the option to use one weapon all the way through the game?

Kane: Yes, a player can continue to upgrade or “grow” his/her principle weapon all the way through the game. A player starts out with one weapon and a special gem called the “Soul of Growing Weapon”, and he/she can combine this gem and the weapon to turn it into a growing weapon. Once this is done, he/she can feed more and more advanced weapons to this growing weapon, which will assimilate all the attributes of the fed weapons and become more and more powerful. For the mount system, a player can acquire a mount egg in game through various means, and then hatch the egg and raise the baby mount to a full-grown adult mount. Much attention, care and cash will be needed to raise a good mount, but the rewards will be very satisfying.

Ten Ton Hammer: Another interesting feature in MWO is the AI system that allows you to make your character level up even when you’re not at your computer. How does this system work? Will the computer level up as quickly as a human being? What stops players from simply turning this on and waiting till their max level?

Kane: The AI Robot system serves as very useful tool to provide some ease and convenience to our players. Basically a player can simply turn on the Robot, and it can perform many basic functions, such as locking and attacking monsters, using of different skills, nursing (feeding HP or MP potions), picking up items, etc. We also believe that the introduction of this AI Robot System, actually improves the fairness of our game, since it completely eliminates the need of using illegal bots. On the other hand, no matter how intelligent it is, it is still only a Robot, and it can not function as well as a smart human brain. Therefore, a smart player who knows how to play, can certain level faster than the Robot. But when the smart player gets tired from the mouse clicking, he/she might wish to take a rest and spend some time chatting with friends, and the AI system will become a very handy tool.

The developers are placing a huge emphasis on localization in MWO.

Players can actually create a “growing weapon” that advances with them throughout the game.

Ten Ton Hammer: What are the “7 Living Skills”? What do they do in the game world?

Kane: The “7 Living Skills” in MWO are: herbs, collecting, lumbering, mining, leather gathering, alchemy, blacksmithing, tailoring, and craftsmanship. These skills provide another dimension of game-play for one to individualize his/her character. For example, when a player has developed his/her living skills to a high-enough level, he/she might be able to craft specially-enchanted armors.

Ten Ton Hammer: How does the video chat option work in Magic World Online? Why did the developers choose to make it an option in the first place?

Kane: This is a very innovative and important function of MWO. It was designed to strengthen instantaneous in-game communication for players’ newly established friendship, and thus to enhance the “community feeling” of our game. We also have great respect for players’ privacy. If a player does not wish to be bothered with request of video chatting, he/she can simply turn off this option. here is an option.

Ten Ton Hammer: What sort of options do players have when they’re building their own house? Can they place it anywhere in the game world? Or is there a restricted area of land where they can build?

Kane: No, they can not place their houses anywhere in game. There is a special area in game called the Uptown where players can build their houses.. In order to own a house, a player must first complete some quests to obtain a real estate certificate, then find a maid and decorate the house with different furniture. There are many interesting and unique benefits of owning a house. For example, when one is hurt and returns to his/her house, his/her HP/MP will recover immediately. A player can also choose to get married inside his/her own house. After all, cost of living is very high these days, and owning a house will be a huge statement on one’s financial success in the MWO world.

Players in MWO can build houses in the game world.

Ten Ton Hammer: Why should players join a guild in MWO? How can guilds get those fantastic moving castles?

Kane: A solo hero is always lonely. MWO is a community game, and what is a better way to make a lot of friends other than joining a Guild? In addition to the weekly State Wars between Dynasty and Empire, there are also Guild Wars, held on a daily basis.
A Moving Castle is built by the blacksmith in a guild It is not an easy task since all the guild members need to work hard together to collect and contribute a great deal of money and resource to build one. Due to its high cost and horrific power of it, the function has not yet been opened to our players in the current version. Watch the upcoming expansion packs for the release of this feature!

Ten Ton Hammer: Is there anything else you’d like to tell us about MWO?

Kane: In a nutshell, MWO is a new-concept MMORPG, with some very interesting and unique features. With its rich content and unique game play, this is a game that exactly meets the need of those who are busy with school, work, or childcare, and so forth, and do not have a lot of time to play games. The game is well-balanced, and fair to all players due to the elimination of the illegal bots.
Furthermore, the game will be operated on a free-to-play, item-based mode. Our players can download the game for free, register a free account, and play the game for free, for life. Buying in-game items will provide some limited benefits to players, but it is absolutely not required.
